The MARCEL project
A new communication space is growing from the convergence of video, computer and telecommunication technologies, coalescing into a system - roughly called the network - searching for its own logic and a cultural, social and political identity. What this space will mean to society is not yet clear, its final content uncertain, and how it will affect culture open to healthy speculation and necessary experimentation before its final specificity is defined.
The overall goal of the MARCEL project is to occupy the network space artistically, educationally and culturally and participate in that coming definition.
That goal is translated into the following programme:
- to promote artistic experimentation and collaboration in all forms of interactive art
- to promote artistic experimentation and collaboration in all forms of interactive art
- to promote philosophical exchange between art and science
- to develop the potential of the network as an educational tool
- to study the network as a pedagogical subject
- to develop co-operation between art and industry
- to participate in the development of cultural expression on the network
The means of accomplishing this goal is through the creation of an interactive broadband network of artists, artistic and cultural institutions involved in the same research and experimentation, to develop, instead of separate centres of research, an interdependent system of institutions and organisations whose very operation reflects the organisational structure of the network.
